Richard Wayne Penniman, now more famously known as Little Richard, was born December 5, 1932. The singer/songwriter/pianist is one of the earliest pioneers of rock and roll, Little Richard is proclaimed by his fans as the "Real King of Rock 'n Roll."
As one of 12 children, Little Richard began his recording career in the '50s with a mix of boogie-woogie music and rhythm and blues. His first demo of "Little Richard's Boogie" would eventually fall into the hands of Bumps Blackwell. Blackwell arranged for Little Richard to come to New Orleans to record that same song. While he was taking a break, Little Richard broke into an impromptu version of "Tutti Frutti."
That song's introduction "womp-bomp-a-loom-op-a-womp-bam-boom!"would become a model for future Little Richard songs. Little Richard had more hits over the next few years, including "Long Tall Sally," "Slippin' and Slidin'," and "Good Golly, Miss Molly." His first release was Here's Little Richard in 1957.
Little Richard would release albums at a rate of more than one a year, sometimes with two or three in the same year. In 1962, while touring Europe, Little Richard's opening act was then then-unknown Beatles. The following year, his opening act was the then-unknown Rolling Stones.
The Life and Times of Little Richard was written by Charles White in 1984. In the '80s, Little Richard would start getting awards for his contribution as a pioneer of popular music. He was among the first inductees in to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame when it opened in 1986. Little Richard received the Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award in 1993. He also received the American Music Award of Merit in 1997, among other awards.
While working on his music, Little Richard also appeared on television and in movies, as well as commercials. Some of his movie credits include The Girl Can't Help It in 1956, Top Secret in 1984, and Mystery, Alaska in 1998; some of his television credits include an episode of Miami Vice in 1985 and Night Man on USA in 1997. In all, Little Richard has appeared on television as himself over 80 times. He was the executive producer of Little Richard in 2000 and has been on 18 television shows and 48 movies.
