Little Feat was formed in Los Angeles in 1969 by two former members of Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention: songwriter/guitarist Lowell George and bass guitarist Roy Estrada. Later on, they were joined by drummer Richard Hayward and keyboardist/vocalist Bill Payne. The name Little Feat was taken from Mothers' drummer Jimmy Carl Black's comment about the size of George's pedal feet.
Little Feat's first release was their self-titled debut in 1971; that was followed by Sailin' Shoes in 1972. Both would receive critical acclaim. Since they had almost no commercial success, the band began to fall apart. Estrada was replaced by Kenny Gradney; guitarist/vocalist Paul Barrere and percussionist Sam Clayton were both added. The new line up changed the band's sound, which was evidenced by their next two releases in Dixie Chicken in 1973 and Feats Don't Fail Me Now in 1974.
During the mid-'70s, Little Feat would reach their peak through incessant touring. The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin both admitted to being loyal Little Feat fans. When The Last Record Album was released in 1975, and it showed Barrere and Payne's developing interest in jazz-rock. As the group continued to move toward jazz-rock, George would contribute less and less to the songwriting. Little Feat's first live album, Waiting for Columbus, released in 1978, was considered by various rock music critics to be one of the best live albums of that decade.
Down of the Farm was released in 1979, right before Little Feat disbanded. Nine years later, Little Feat reformed with Barrere, Clayton, Gradney, Hayward, and with the addition of songwriter/guitarist Craig Fuller and guitarist/ trumpeter Fred Tackett. While the new line up would release a few more albums, radio stations and venues stopped supporting their genre of music. Fuller left the band in 1993, and was replaced with Shaun Murphy.
The most recent Littler Feat studio album is The Essentials released in 2005. In 2002 and 2003 Little Feat released a number of live albums. Little Feat songs have been covered by many performers including The Byrds, Garth Brooks, Randy Newman, and Van Halen.
