Lionel Richie began his music career with the Commodores during the '70s. The Commodores had hits such as "Easy," "Three Times a Lady," and "Brick House." After he left the Commodores, Lionel Richie had five No. 1 and 12 straight Top 10 hits in the United States in the '80s.
Lionel Richie's self-titled debut came out in 1982. It would hit No. 3 on the charts on its way to selling over 4 million copies. Can't Slow Down was released one year later, sold twice as many albums, and earned him a Grammy Award for Album on the Year in 1984. He would release Dancing on the Ceiling in 1986, but it seemed to signal the end of his success.
Lionel Richie released albums in the '90s as well, but they also failed to generate much success. Renaissance in 2000 and Just for You in 2004 did not see a single hit in the United States. However, the first single off of his eighth release, Coming Home, hit No. 6 on the charts. The September 2006 release also hit No. 8 on the charts.
