Limp Bizkit and Korn are often referred to as the bands that are responsible for the popularization of nu metal. Limp Bizkit was formed in 1994 and included singer Fred Durst, guitarist Wes Boreland, bassist Sam Rivers, and drummer John Otto. When they first started out, Limp Bizkit spent their time traveling around their hometown of Jacksonville. Soon enough they became friends with DJ Lethal, who was a member at that time of House of Pain. After House of Pain broke up, DJ Lethal joined and completed Limp Bizkit.
In 1996, one year after meeting Korn bassist Reginald Arizu backstage at one of their concerts, Limp Bizkit released a three-song EP. Limp Bikzit's debut album, Three Dollar Bill Y'all was released in 1997, and it wasn't until Limp Bikzit's association with Korn that the album began to sell. Through that association, Limp Bizkit made appearances on MTV, the Family Values Tour, and Ozzfest. The Limp Bizkit cover of George Michaels' "Faith" was their break out hit and was featured on the soundtrack of the movie "Very Bad Things."
Limp Bizkit released their sophomore album, Significant Other, in 1999. Significant Other featured the hit "Nookie," which was a runaway hit. Later that year, Limp Bizkit played Woodstock '99 and received harsh criticism for the violence that went on during their performance. That same year, Fred Durst was involved in feuds with Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, Slipknot, guitarist Zakk Wylde, Scott Stapp of Creed, and with Eminem. Even so, Limp Bizkit released Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water in 2000. Two singles, "My Generation" and "Rollin'" were released simultaneously. Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water sold over one million copies in the first week of release and set a record for a rock album. The release went on to sell 6.5 million copies.
Wes Boreland left the band in 2001, citing that he was tired of all the feuding and reportedly called Limp Bizkit a "sell out band." Following his departure, Limp Bizkit held an open audition for a new guitarist. Even so, Limp Bizkit announced in 2003 that the replacement for Wes Boreland was actually going to be Mike Smith, guitarist for the band Snot. Results May Vary, was released in October of 2003, and hit Platinum after 14 weeks on the charts. Wes Boreland rejoined the band a short time later, and Limp Bizkit was back the original line up. Limp Bizkit released Greatest Hitz in November 2005.
