Lily Tomlin was born as Mary Jean Tomlin on September 1, 1939. After college, Lily Tomlin spent her time doing stand-up in nightclubs in Detroit, Michigan and New York City. Her very first television appearance was in 1965 on The Merv Griffin Show.

Four years later, Lily Tomlin joined Laugh-In, a sketch comedy show. She made her movie debut in 1975 in Nashville. She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for that movie. In all, Lily Tomlin has appeared in over 20 movies.

In addition to her movie career, she has also appeared on television and not just the Laugh-In. Lily Tomlin was the voice of the Ms. Frazzle on The Magic School Bus from 1994 until 1998. She also appeared on Murphy Brown in the '90s, and had a small role in The West Wing and Will & Grace, to name a few. Lily Tomlin also appeared in the 1985 one-woman Broadway show The Search For Signs of Intelligent Live in the Universe, for which she won a Tony Award.

Lily Tomlin was inducted into the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame in 1998, and won the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in 2003 and 2006.
