Claude Russell Bridges, known as Leon Russell, was born April 2, 1942. The singer/songwriter/pianist is known mostly as a session musician and has played with the likes of Jerry Lee Lewis, Phil Spector, and the Rolling Stones. When it comes to his solo career, Leon Russell focuses on the genres of rock, blues, and gospel.

Leon Russell began his musical career at the age of 14 by lying about his age to score a gig as backup at a Tulsa, Oklahoma nightclub, where he played with Ronnie Hawkins and Jerry Lee Lewis. Lee Russell began performing with the likes of The Byrds, Gary Lewis and the Playboys, and Herb Alpert during the '60s. Shortly after he built his own recording studio, Leon Russell recorded his first album, Look Inside the Asylum Choir in 1967.

His follow-up was a self-titled album, and in 1971 Leon Russell appeared at George Harrison's Concert for Bangladesh, after he had worked with B.B. King, Eric Clapton, and Bob Dylan, and toured with the Rolling Stones. Carny was released in 1972 and hit No. 2 on the charts; the following Leon Russell releases did not fare as well.

Leon Russell continued to release albums in the '70s, with only three releases in the '80s and nine in the '90s. His most recent release was 2002's Moonlight & Love Songs. Now into his 60s, Leon Russell continues to tour.
