Leo Kottke was born September 11, 1945. His acoustic guitar playing has made him somewhat of a legend among fellow guitarists. Over the course of his 30-year career, Leo Kottke has managed to combine folk, jazz, and blues influences into his music.

Prior to playing the guitar, Leo Kottke played the trombone and violin. His debut album, 12-String Blues, was released in 1968; however, it is his sophomore release, 6- and 12-String Guitar from 1969 that is perhaps his best-known release. By the early '70s, Leo Kottke felt pressure to perform as a folk singer-songwriter, and some of his albums in the '70s have him recording with backup musicians.

In the early '80s, his hectic touring schedule and recording demands caught up with him in the form of tendonitis and related nerve damage, both of which threatened to end his career. Eventually, it would force him to change his playing style to using fingerpicks instead of just using his fingers alone.

He still continues to release albums, and Leo Kottke has collaborated with the likes of John Fahey, Lyle Lovett, and Rickie Lee Jones. Leo Kottke has also recorded the music of Tom T. Hall, Johnny Cash, and Fleetwood Mac, to name a few.

With 29 albums to his name, Leo Kottke most recently released Sixty Six Steps in 2005.
