His upbringing was conservative, traditional, and church going, yet Larry the Cable Guy broke out of the mold to become the posterchild for hick humor with no topic too gross to escape Larry the Cable Guy's observations. The bizarre stories about Larry the Cable Guy's "family" have become comic legend. Daniel Lawrence Whitney, known better as Larry the Cable Guy, was raised on a pig farm in Pawnee City, Nebraska. His family moved to Florida when he was 16 and he went on to Baptist University of America in Georgia where he perfected his fake southern accent.
Larry the Cable Guy built his act on well-timed one liners. Larry the Cable Guy tried his hand at stand-up in 1986 and the fans loved his slow, approachable style. He was hooked too and he embarked on comedy career in 1988. Larry the Cable Guy was created when he called into a radio station as the fictional character, one of several characters the comic developed.
Larry the Cable Guy's southern fan base grew to a more national audience after he appeared on Evening at The Improv and Comic Strip Live. Bits on the nationally syndicated Bob and Tom Radio Show led to regular radio commentary on Jeff Foxworthy's Country Countdown Show. Immense success followed in 2000 when Jeff Foxworthy invited Larry the Cable Guy to join his Blue Collar Comedy Tour. The DVD of the tour sold more than 1 million copies and brought Comedy Central its highest ratings in its 12-year history.
The Larry the Cable Guy CD, Lord, I Apologize, appeared in 2001 and stayed in the Top 20 for two years running. Larry the Cable Guy: Git-R-Done became his first solo DVD in 2003. In 2004 Larry the Cable Guy, Jeff Foxworthy, and Bill Engvall turned the Blue Collar tour into the popular television show Blue Collar TV. Larry the Cable Guy released another CD, The Right To Bare Arms, in 2005 along with a book called Git-R-Done.
Larry the Cable Guy has crossed the next frontier onto the big screen in 2006 with Health Inspector The Movie. His lack of politically correct humor and bodily functions gags may bring him Hollywood success. Listen for the voice of Larry the Cable Guy in Disney/Pixar's 2006 blockbuster Cars; he plays "Mater," the tow truck. Larry the Cable Guy always appears in character during promotions and interviews, leaving some speculation about the real personality of Daniel Lawrence Whitney. He and his wife are expecting their first child in 2006.
