Larry Carlton was born March 2, 1948 and was playing guitar by the age of 6. He first became interested in jazz while he was in high school, and was influenced by Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery, and B. B. King. During the '70s, Larry Carlton was a busy man out in Los Angeles where he appeared on as many as 500 recordings a year. Included in those recordings were the likes of Steely Dan, Joni Mitchell, and Quincy Jones. His guitar work on Steely Dan's "Kid Charlemagne" earned him the No. 3 spot as Best Guitar Solo by Rolling Stone magazine.
Larry Carlton signed with MCA Master Series in 1985 to record Alone, But Never Alone. He spent the next five years working on various solo projects, including winning a Grammy Award for his cover of Michael McDonald's "Minute By Minute."
On Solid Ground was released in 1989, and the jazz-orientated Kid Gloves was released in 1992. The Southern-blues influenced Renegade Gentleman was released in 1993.
In the late '90s, Larry Carlton became a member of the smooth jazz quartet Fourplay. In the 2000s, Larry Carlton has continued to release albums and he now has over two dozen to his credit. His most recent, Firewire, came in 2005.
