Kingston Trio formed in 1957. Bob Shane, Nick Reynolds, and Dave Guard formed the band in the Palo Alto, California area when they were just out of college. Eventually, they were discovered at the college club Cracked Pot by Frank Werber. Werber would become the Kingston Trio's manager and was responsible for the one-shot deal with Capitol Records.
Their first single, "Tom Dooley," went gold in 1958; they would earn a Grammy Award for Best Country & Western Performance for that song one year later. In 1906, the Kingston Trio would earn another Grammy, this time for Best Ethnic or Traditional Folk Recording for Kingston Trio at Large.
Eventually, Kingston Trio would have four simultaneous releases among the Top 10 selling albums, a record that would not be broken for almost 40 years. Despite their success, Guard left the band in 1961 to form the Whiskey Hill Singers. He was replaced by John Stewart. The Kingston Trio disbanded in 1967.
Shane would start the New Kingston Trio in 1969. Guard, Reynolds, and Werber would eventually sign back on, and the band was back to The Kingston Trio by 1976. Shane would retire from the band in 2004 due to health issues, and was subsequently replaced by Bill Zorn.
A few line up changes later, and the Kingston Trio now features George Grove, Bill Zorn, and Rick Dougherty. They have released 42 albums, with the most recent as Live In Reno, which was released in the summer of 2001.
