Any American Idol fan knows Kelly Clarkson after her 2002 win during the first season of the popular show. But this pop and rock singer-songwriter from Texas has accomplished more than escape the wrath of Simon. Kelly Clarkson followed a successful pop album in 2003 with the more rock-oriented album Breakaway in 2004. Taking home two Grammy Awards, Kelly Clarkson is just getting started.
In middle school a teacher overheard Kelly Clarkson singing in a restroom and asked her to audition for the school choir. Years of school musicals followed and Kelly Clarkson earned top honors as a member of the Texas All-State Choir. She decided to pursue music professionally and worked feverishly toward a demo, which would yield no success. Kelly Clarkson moved to Hollywood and got work as a television extra and briefly sung demos for songwriter Gerry Goffin. His song "Natural Women" would later help Kelly Clarkson win American Idol. She moved back to Texas to regroup after an apartment fire. With a push from a friend Kelly Clarkson entered and beat out 10,000 contestants to win the first American Idol.
Spurred on by the success of the show the first Kelly Clarkson single "A Moment Like This," set a Billboard record rising from No. 52 to No. 1. "Miss Independent" became a success earned Kelly Clarkson a 2004 Grammy Award nomination. The second album from Kelly Clarkson, Breakaway, had a stronger rock influence and got mixed reviews. But four singles from the album have garnered Kelly Clarkson Top 10 singles, including "Since U Been Gone," which peaked at No. 2.
Reportedly Kelly Clarkson performs on stage in her bare feet, adding to the wholesome Kelly Clarkson image. In early 2006 Kelly Clarkson received negative publicity from the show that launched her after she balked at the use of her new songs on the show. After receiving little financial compensation for her first album, due to the contract she won on the show, it was reported that the singer's management asked for more money than songwriters typically receive from the show. A resolution with Kelly Clarkson was negotiated quickly. A new Kelly Clarkson album is expected in 2006.
