Keith Urban Set His Sites on Nashville

Most artists are driven but Keith Urban had a plan to get to Nashville well before he could actually drive. Despite being born in New Zealand, Keith Urban grew up listening to American country artists Charley Pride, Dolly Parton, Don Williams, and Jim Reeves. His parents loved American country music. In 1969, two-year old Keith Urban moved with his family to Australia where he, with his parents, actively participated in a local country music club. Keith Urban began to learn the guitar at age 6. Reportedly, Keith Urban planned to relocate to Nashville since he was 7 years old because "that's where the records are made." Young Keith Urban began winning talent contests at age 8. By 12, he was booking his band in local clubs, and at 15, he quit school to hit the road.

A teenage fascination with Dire Straits worked his way into his act as he fused rock-style guitar with country music. Keith Urban worked with more seasoned bands and developed his craft. He came to America to work sing in 1989 but could only stay for six months due to his immigration status. His first solo album charted four No. 1 country hits in Australia. After several return trips to the U.S. and success in Australia, Keith Urban used his music to open the door to Nashville. The Extraordinary Alien visa for outstanding sportsmen, musicians, artists, and intellectuals opened the gate to the United States for Keith Urban. In 1992 Keith Urban could finally moved to Nashville.

Keith Urban became the front man for The Ranch, a three-piece group that released one album in 1997. The album garnered critical acclaim but got poor airplay. Keith Urban then chose to pursue a solo career. But the rejections of the music world led Keith Urban to unhealthy ways of boosting his morale and a cocaine addiction. Eventually Keith Urban checked into rehab in 1998 and committed to kicking his habit. Keith Urban's work with The Ranch got him recognition and invitations to perform as a session musician on albums such as Garth Brooks' Double Live and Dixie Chicks' Fly.

At 32, Keith Urban released his self-titled American debut, achieving three Top Five hits in 2000. The 2001 Academy of Country Music Awards named Keith Urban Top New Male Vocalist. He released Golden Road in 2002 and the eight-week chart-topping success of the single "Somebody Like You" sent Keith Urban and his long developing career into high gear. Three other singles from the album were released, two went to No. 1 and the third rose to No. 3. When Keith Urban released the 2004 album Be Here it was nominated for best country album at the Grammy Awards and at the Academy of Country Music Awards. The third Keith Urban album produced three No. 1 hits and a fourth at No. 2. Since 2000, Keith Urban has become a hit machine on both pop and country charts -- 11 singles have been released and every one of them has made it into the Top 4. Keith Urban has earned 32 music awards internationally including a Grammy and several CMAs and ACMs.

When success started Keith Urban got the opportunity to tour as opening act for Brooks and Dunn and Kenny Chesney. His first headlining arena tour was titled Keith Urban Be Here '04. Keith Urban followed that up with the successful Alive in '05 tour and some 2006 performances. Recently he has made even more headlines for his relationship with actress Nicole Kidman.
