Keane formed in Battle, East Sussex, England, in 1997. Vocalist Tom Chaplin, pianist and keyboardist Tim Rice-Oxley, and drummer Richard Hughes. Chaplin and Rice-Oxley knew each other from childhood, and the two formed the band with former member Dominic Scott. When Hughes joined the band in 1997, they changed their name from the Lotus Eaters to Keane after an older lady they knew by the name of Cherry Keane.
Keane began playing covers by such bands as U2, Oasis, and the Beatles. In February 2000, Keane released "Hope & Anchor," their first single, and sold 500 copies at pubs where they played. In 2002, Keane was invited by record producer James Sanger to record some songs in his studio, which they did. Keane then signed with Island Records and released the single "Somewhere Only We Know" in February 2004, off of the forthcoming album Hopes and Fears. The song would go on to be Keane's best-selling single.
Keane opened for U2 in the States during the fall of 2005. Keane was also nominated for a Grammy Award in 2006 for Best New Artist against Fall Out Boy, Sugarland, Ciara, and eventually losing to fellow nominee John Legend. Under the Iron Sea was released in 2006, and it debuted at No. 1 on the UK charts.
