Founded in 1973, KC and the Sunshine Band made a name for themselves and their funk, R&B and disco music with songs such as "That's the Way (I Like It)" and "Get Down Tonight."

Harry Wayne Casey (KC) was a record store employee who formed his band with Richard Finch, Jerome Smith, Fermin Goytisolo, and Robert Johnson. Their debut album Do It Good was released in 1973 and featured the singles "Blow Your Whistle" and "Sound Your Funky Horn." "Rock Your Baby" would become a hit in 1974 by selling over 5 million copies.

KC and the Sunshine Band saw their self-titled follow-up album hit triple platinum in 1975. "Get Down Tonight" topped the R&B charts in April and the Billboard chart in August. "That's the Way (I Like It)" was a No. 1 hit in November 1975. Part 3, released in 1976, had three Top 5 singles: "I'm Your Boogie Man," "(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty," and "Keep It Comin' Love." Their last chart-topping hit would come in 1980 as the first No. 1 hit of 1980 with "Please Don't Go."

The Painter and Space Cadet were released in 1981 but saw little success. KC Ten was released in 1983 and still, sales fell flat. Casey would retire in 1985, only to be brought out of retirement in 1991. KC and the Sunshine Band were reformed, and they began to tour again. Oh Yeah! was released in 1993, 10 years since they had released a new album (not including compilations).

They released I'll Be There For You in 2001, and while it was praised by critics, it failed to make an impact among fans. Over the years, KC and the Sunshine Band released a dozen albums to go with nine compilations.
