Kansas specialized in progressive rock with their distinctive American flavor in the '70s. Over the years, Kansas has received harsh criticism but still receives airplay on the radio. Perhaps their biggest hit, "Dust in the Wind" was certified gold as a digital download in 2005 after it recorded 1 million downloads.
At first, Kansas was called The Reasons Why. They were then Saratoga, and finally settled on Kansas in 1970. Members at the time included Lynn Meredith, Don Montre, Dan Wright and Kerry Livgren. Dave Hope, Phil Ehart, and Larry Baker would later join the band. Ehart would leave a year later to be replaced by Zeke Lowe, who was then replaced with Brad Schultz.
Hope was replaced with Rod Mikinski, and Baker with John Bolton. While Hope and White formed White Clover with a number of other people, Kansas continued recording. Kansas was released in 1974 and hit No. 174 on the charts. The release would showcase a mix of guitars, keyboards, vocals, and violin. The two follow up releases, Song for America and Masque slowly brought the Kansas name to households in the United States.
"Carry On Wayward Son" was off of the fourth release, Leftoverture, in 1976. "Dust in the Wind" from 1977's Point of Know Return was their biggest hit to date, reaching No. 6 on the charts.
In the early '80s, Kansas was beginning to fall apart. Livgren and Hope began to feel more separation from the rest of the band, and soon enough the two of them and Steinhardt would leave the band by 1986. Billy Greer and Steve Morse would join the band for Power. After the release of In the Spirit of Things in 1988, several more members left the band.
By the late '90s, more members came and left the band. In 2002, the second Kansas line up recorded under the name Proto-Kaw. Kansas announced they would tour in 2006.
