Julio Iglesias Information

Julio Iglesias was born as Julio Jose de la Cuerva on September 23, 1943. Known simply as Julio Iglesias, he is Spain's best-selling singer and one of the best-selling Spanish singers of all time. Throughout his career, Julio Iglesias has sold over 250 million records in a number of different languages through the release of 77 albums. Julio Iglesias has put on over 5,000 concerts.

Prior to his career as a singer, Julio Iglesias played professional soccer as a goalkeeper for Real Madrid. Unfortunately, Julio Iglesias suffered an accident that forced him out of soccer. During the time he was bed-ridden, Julio Iglesias began composing songs. Thanks to winning the Benidorm International Song Festival in 1968, Julio Iglesias signed a contract with Columbia Records Latin music label Discos Columbia.

In 1978, Julio Iglesias signed a contract with CBS International, and soon learned how to speak French, English, German, Portuguese, German, and Italian. The 1984 release 1100 Bel Air Place sold over three million copies in the United States. Julio Iglesias won a Grammy Award in 1988 for Best Latin Pop Album for Un Hombre Solo. In the early ‘90s, Julio Iglesias went back to his Spanish roots, and released Tango in 1996. Two years later, Julio Iglesias released My Life: The Greatest Hits. His 2003 release, Divorcio, sold 350,000 copies in Spain on the first day of release; it soon hit No. 1 in Spain, Portugal, Italy, France, and Russia.

From 2003 through 2004, Julio Iglesias went on a 10-month world tour to Europe, Asia, the United States, South America, and Africa. More than half of the shows sold out within days of going on sale. Julio Iglesias was deemed a citizen of the Dominican Republic in late August 2005. Since then, he has made several investments in the eastern town of Punta Cana. A 2006 release tentatively titled International is expected to be followed by a world tour.
