American folk singer Judith Marjorie Collins was born May 1, 1939 in Seattle, Washington. When she was a child, she studied classical piano and made her public debut at the age of 13 while performing Mozart's Concerto for Two Pianos.
In the early '60s, Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger spiked a revival of folk. Judy Collins was instantly interested in their music. She already had been playing guitar since the age of 16. When Judy Collins moved to New York City, she spent her days busking and playing in clubs until she was signed by Elektra Records. She released A Maid of Constant Sorrow in 1961 at the age of 22.
In the beginning, she sang traditional folk songs or songs by other artists. She also had a hand in bringing lesser-known artists (at the time) such as Joni Mitchell. July Collins' 1967 album Wildflowers earned her a Grammy Award for Best Folk Performance or Folk Recording in 1968. Judy Collins had a solid reputation built for her by the '70s and finally began standing out due to her own compilations. She also won a Grammy Award for Song of the Year in 1975.
Judy Collins released her memoir "Trust Your Heart" in 1987 and has also written two novels. She is also drawn to social activism as a representative of UNICEF and campaigns for the abolition of landmines. In addition, she also works as an advocate for suicide prevention, following the suicide of her son Clark Taylor.
