Journey began in San Francisco in 1973 with an initial jazz-rock style switching to rock in the Infinity album. Originally, former Santana members Neal Schon and Gregg Rollie teamed with Ross Valory, George Tickner, and Prairie Prince and called themselves Golden Gate Rhythm Section, planning to be a studio band. While waiting for work they developed their own material and changed their name. Vocalist Steve Perry joined Journey in 1975 helping bring Journey's power ballads to the top of the charts. Evolution brought Journey their first US Top 20 hit, "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin." Jonathan Cain joined the band after the live album Captured. Cain's songwriting input enhanced the band's sound.
Escape reached No. 1 and stayed in the charts for more than a year. It also spawned three US Top 10 hit singles, "Who's Crying Now", "Don't Stop Believin'" and "Open Arms". The follow-up, Frontiers, was also massively successful, staying at No. 2 on the Billboard album chart for nine weeks. The 1986 album Raised On Radio generated the last US hit single for Journey, "Be Good To Yourself."
Steve Perry released a successful solo album in 1984 but remained with the band through 1987. Journey has undergone a series of personnel changes over their 30-plus year tenure. Members of the band have been part of many other famous bands including Santana, The Steve Miller Band, Jefferson Starship, The Babys, The Tubes, and Bad English. Among Journey's members were drummers Steve Smith, Aynsley Dunbar, Mike Baird and Larrie Londin; guitarist George Tickner; bass players Randy Jackson and Bob Glaub; and singer Robert Fleischman.
In 1996 Perry, Schon, Smith, Cain and Valory reunited to release Trial By Fire, which entered the US chart at No. 3. Deen Castronovo replaced Smith in 1997 and vocalist Steve Augeri replaced Perry after health problems sidelined the singer. Vocalist Steve Augeri first recorded with Journey for the band's 1998 contribution to the soundtrack for the film Armageddon: "Remember Me." The soundtrack hit No. 1 on the Billboard album charts. The current Journey line up includes Neal Schon -Guitar, Jonathon Cain - Keyboards, Ross Valory - Bass, Steve Augeri - Vocals, and Deen Castronovo - Drums. Journey released a few new albums with the new lineup, the latest entitled Generations in 2005.
Touring today with other bands from the 1970s and 1980s, Journey plays both large and small venues. In 2003 Journey toured with Styx and REO Speedwagon. In 2006 Journey paired with Def Leppard on another large venue tour.
Journey has sold more than 75 million records and is the 29th best selling band of all time. In 2005 Journey received a star on Hollywood's famous Walk of Fame. Many former band members joined the current lineup including a surprise appearance from Steve Perry after a nine year absence. The Journey single "Don't Stop Believin" enjoyed a popularity resurgence in 2005 as the theme song for the Chicago White Sox when they went on to win the World Series.
