American violinist Joshua Bell was both December 9, 1967 in Bloomington, Indiana. He began taking violin lessons at the age of 4. He first studied under Mimi Zweig, but then changed to Josef Gingold. Joshua Bell still speaks highly of Gingold as a teacher and a mentor.
When he was 14, Joshua Bell appeared as a soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra. He then went on to study at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Joshua Bell made his debut at Carnegie Hall in 1985 with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra.
Joshua Bell won a Grammy Award for his recording of Nicholas Maw's violin concerto, and also performed on the Oscar Award-winning soundtrack for The Red Violin. His violin is a 300 year old Stradivarius called the Gibson ex Hubermann. When Joshua Bell first played with it, he was told by the owner that he could buy it off of him for $4 million. Soon enough, Joshua Bell would sell his own Stradivarius and was able to take out loans to purchase the Gibson ex Hubermann for just under $3.5 million. He has had it stolen from him twice.
His first recording with the Gibson ex Hubermann sold over 100,000 copies, which is a quite considerable amount for a classical album. Joshua Bell currently serves as an artistic partner for the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, and is a visiting professor at the Royal Academy of Music.
