Puerto Rican singer Jose Feliciano was born on September 10, 1945 and has been blind since birth. Regardless of his handicap, he has since gone on to have many international hits.
Jose Feliciano was first exposed to music at the age of three. Two years later, his family moved to Spanish Harlem, New York City, and by the age of nine Jose Feliciano was playing on the Teatro Puerto Rico. Already able to play various instruments such as the accordion, Jose Feliciano wanted to learn how to play the guitar. By the age of 17, he quit school and landed in Detroit.
In 1966, he performed at Mar Del Plata, Argentina, at the Festival de Mar Del Plata. He stayed there to record some music for RCA Victor, and saw two hits in "Poquita Fe" and "Uste," both recorded in Spanish. Two more releases later, and Jose Feliciano had made a name for himself all over Latin America.
He moved to Los Angeles to pursue his dream of becoming a household name in the United States. Jose Feliciano then recorded "Feliz Navidad," which has become a staple of the holidays in the States and is one of the Top 25 all-time most played Christmas songs in the world. He garnered Grammy Awards for Best New Artist of the Year and Best Pop Song of the Year in 1969.
Jose Feliciano would go on to enjoy success in both Spanish music and English rock and roll. He also recorded a handful of songs in Italian. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1987, and was still a very popular singer into the '80s. In 1995, New York City renamed Public School 155 as Jose Feliciano Performing Arts School. In 2006, Jose Feliciano's Six String Lady was dedicated to his master, Andrew Segovia. It is available for download only from his personal website.
