Jon Stewart was born in New York City as Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz. After attending College of William and Mary he led a number of jobs including contract administrator for City University of New York, puppeteer, bartender, and contingency planner for the New Jersey Department of Human Services. He moved to New York in 1986 to try his hand at comedy. By 1989 he was hosting Comedy Central's Short Attention Span Theater. David Letterman helped him land The Jon Stewart Show on MTV in 1993.

A number of television sitcom appearances and roles in several feature films followed. Most of the movies were flops and Jon Stewart often makes fun of his acting credits. Stewart began hosting The Daily Show, a fake news show, in 1999. In 2005, The Daily Show and Jon Stewart received two Emmy Awards and a Best Comedy Album Grammy Award for the audio book edition of America (The Book). He often criticizes established news sources and openly attacked the television debate show Crossfire while a guest on the show.

Stewart has received the prestigious Peabody Award twice for the coverage of the 2000 and 2004 U.S. presidential elections. Newsweek magazine named Jon Stewart the "Who's Next?" person for the year of 2004. He was named one of the 100 most influential people in 2005 by Time magazine. Jon Stewart has twice hosted the Grammy Awards and hosted the Oscars in 2006. He is married and has two children.
