American singer Johnny Mathis was born as John Royce Mathis on September 30, 1935. Johnny Mathis is considered to be one of the last traditional male vocalists from before the rock-dominated '60s. Throughout the mid-'80s, Johnny Mathis continued to focus on jazz and pop, even though the contemporary adult audience was shrinking. During his career, Johnny Mathis saw 60 singles hit the charts, and a dozen of his releases hit gold or platinum.

Johnny Mathis began studying with voice teacher Connie Cox at the age of 13, and stayed with her for six years. He is one of few singers who received professional training. When he was just 19, Johnny Mathis had to choose to either appear for the Olympic tryouts as a runner or keep an appointment in New York for his first recordings. He opted for a music career, and the rest is history.

His first release, Johnny Mathis: A New Sound in Popular Song featured jazz melodies, and his second release featured more soft ballads. He also appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1957. Altogether, Johnny Mathis has released dozens of albums, and his music features jazz, traditional pop, Brazilian, and Spanish music, R&B, soft rock, and even some disco; many still consider Johnny Mathis to be a romantic singer.

Johnny Mathis most recently released Isn't it Romantic: the Standards Album in 2005.
