Country/folk singer-songwriter John Prine was born in 1946. He grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and started playing guitar at age 14. But he took a detour into the army and worked as a postman. He started playing in the Chicago folk scene and was discovered by Kris Kristofferson. His 1971 self titled debut album was highly acclaimed.

Many John Prine songs have been covered by such artists as Joan Baez, Bette Midler, Bonnie Raitt, Laura Cantrell, and Eddi Reader. Widespread critical and financial success followed John Prine throughout the ‘70s.

He won a Grammy Award for his 1991 album The Missing Years. However, in 1998 John Prine was diagnosed with throat cancer and underwent surgery to remove a tumor. The surgery seemed to add to the gravely quality of his voice. In 2003 he was given a Lifetime Achievement Award for songwriting by the UK's BBC Radio 2 and that same year was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. The 2005 Americana Music Awards honored John Prine with the Artist of the Year award. In 2005, Prine released Fair and Square which won the 2006 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album.
