John Gorka was born in Newark, New Jersey in July 1958. Although he received his first guitar as a Christmas gift when he was 10; it was stolen by his brother and John Gorka would eventually play banjo for his church.
John Gorka began writing songs while he was in high school. After college, his first band was the Razzy Dazzy Spasm Band with Richard Shindell and Doug Anderson. They played non-traditional bluegrass, country, blues, and folk music. Anderson took John Gorka to the Godfrey Daniels coffeehouse in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. After that, John Gorka knew what kind of performer he wanted to become.
He then spent his time at open mic nights, as an MC, sound man, usher, and performer at Godfrey Daniels. By the '80s, he was a there almost every night and eventually began performing in other parts of the country. John Gorka's debut album, I Know, was released in 1987. Since then, he has released nine additional albums, with the most recent, Writing in the Margins, coming in 2006.
