Joffrey Ballet Information

Robert Joffrey and Gerald Arpino first envisioned a unique American dance in 1956. The first company was only six dancers strong when the Joffrey Ballet began touring the country. Their first performance was at Frostberg State Teachers College in Maryland on October 2, 1956.

At a time when other ballet companies were only performing reduced versions of ballet classics, Joffrey and Arpino came together to teach and choreograph original ballets. Joffrey Ballet was originally established in Chicago. After stints in New York City and Los Angeles, it would finally return to Chicago in 1995 to make Chicago its permanent home. From then until 2004, it was known as the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago.

The Joffrey Ballet takes place at Roosevelt University's Auditorium Theatre from October through May. Performances consist of both classical and contemporary pieces.
