Lakewood Church (Houston, Texas) senior pastor Joel Osteen was born March 5, 1963 in Houston. The church claims to have the fastest-growing congregation, having an average of almost 46,000 attendees as of 2005. He also wrote the New York Times bestseller Your Best Life Now: 7 Steps to Living at Your Full Potential .

Joel Osteen's father founded Lakewood Church on Mother's Day 1959. Lakewood would come to have 6,000 members through television ministry, crusades, conferences, missionary support and food distribution. The elder Osteen died of a heart attack in 1999, and Joel Osteen took over later that year.

The slogan "Discover the Champion in You" became Joel Osteen's focus of his preachings. Eventually, the crowd of 7,800 people became too big for the facility they were in, and Lakewood Church soon moved into the 16,000-seat Compaq Center.
