Jodeci formed in 1990 as two pairs of African American brothers in Donald and Dalvin DeGrate and Cedric and Joel Hailey. The name Jodeci comes from a combination of their names/nicknames: Jo-Jo, DeVante and Dalvin, and K-Ci.
Known as the "Bad Boys of R&B," Jodeci manages to combine R&B, soul music, and new jack swing in their music. While Jodeci was influenced by Keith Sweat, Bobby Womack, and Stevie Wonder; Jodeci has influenced Jagged Edge, 112, and Next.
Both the DeGrates and Haileys were gospel performers in the later '80s. The sets of brothers met through girlfriends, and they would eventually become friends with the option of recording together. Eventually, the foursome was signed by Uptown executive Sean Combs, who would help the group form their image. Their television debut came on the June 11, 1991 episode of Soul Train.
Jodeci released their debut album Forever My Lady in 1991. Three singles off that release hit No. 1, and the album would go on to sell over three million copies. Diary of a Mad Band was released in 1993. It would go platinum. Jodeci would release their final album, The Show, The After Party, The Hotel in 1995. The band would break up in 1996. K-Ci and Jo-Jo (the Hailey brothers) would go on to sell more albums than Jodeci.
In 2005, Jodeci released Back to the Future: The Very Best of Jodeci. Jodeci mentioned a comeback album during a March 2006 interview with UK R&B DJ Trevor Nelson. Jodeci reunited in mid-2006 to release a new album.
