Although she might be best known for her songs, Jewel Kilcher is also an actress, philanthropist, and author. Later on in life, she dropped her last name to become known simply as Jewel. When she was growing up in Alaska, Jewel and her father often made money singing in bars and taverns. Jewel began writing songs at the age of 17, and learned to play guitar while attending Interlochen Arts Academy in Interlochen, Michigan, by way of a scholarship.

In the beginning, Jewel was poverty-stricken and lived out of her van. Jewel made multiple appearances at the Innerchange Coffeehouse and Java Joe's in San Diego, and it was there Jewel got her big break. Jewel was discovered by Atlantic Records. Her debut album Pieces of You was released in 1994, when Jewel was only 19. Pieces of You lasted on the Billboard 200 for two years, and hit as high as No. 4 on the chart. "You Were Meant For Me" and "Who Will Save Your Soul?" were both in the Top 10, but "Foolish Games" hit No. 1. Pieces of You would eventually go on to sell over 12 million copies in the United States.

Jewel sang the National Anthem at the Super Bowl in 1998, and releasedSpirit, her follow-up to Pieces of You. Spirit peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and went on to sell four million copies. "Hands" and "Down So Long" both hit the Top 10. Other singles were not as popular. One year later, Jewel released Joy-A Holiday Collection. Two years later Jewel released her third album, This Way. This Way hit as high as No. 9 on the Billboard 200 and sold over one million copies. To date, This Way remains Jewel's most critically acclaimed album.

Jewel's 2003 release, 0304, peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, and was Jewel's highest chart dating. The album did not manage to sell a million copies; it fell just short and sold about 900,000 copies. Jewel is scheduled to release her sixth album in late 2006 tentatively called Goodbye Alice in Wonderland. In addition to her music, Jewel appeared in the movie Ride with the Devil in 1999.

Jewel's book of poetry, "A Night Without Armor" was released in 1998 and sold over one million copies en route to becoming a New York Times Bestseller. Two years later, the autobiography "Chasing Down the Dawn" was released. In addition, Jewel formed the non-profit organization Higher Ground For Humanity to assist developing countries in accessing clean water through The Clearwater Project, which was launched in 1999. So far, the Clearwater Project has taken place in Central and South America, India, and Africa.
