She tried out unsuccessfully for The Mickey Mouse Club, losing out to Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and Justin Timberlake among others. However, as of 2006 Jessica Simpson's star is on the rise and seems to be eclipsing her competition. A series of Jessica Simpson faux pas have left many questioning whether her "Dumb Blonde" act is real or improvised to garner more press attention. But her popularity is definitely real.

After five albums Jessica Simpson has had a handful of hit singles but has not dominated the charts. A reality television show with now ex-husband Nick Lachey drew enormous public attention to the newlyweds. Jessica Simpson has also starred in a televison variety special. Public Affair, her latest album, is said to be more of a dance style pop, reminiscent of early Madonna songs.
