Shawn Corey Carter (better known as Jay-Z) was born December 4, 1969. As one of the most prolific and successful American rappers of the late ‘90s and early 2000s, Jay-Z has been able to maintain both street credibility and commercial appeal. He is currently the President of Def Jam and the CEO of Roc-A-Fella Records. After making a name for himself through free styling, word play, and the blend of street and popular hip hop, Jay-Z allegedly retired in 2003. As of 2005, it was reported that Jay-Z was worth an estimated $320 million.
His first release, Reasonable Doubt in 1996, did reasonably well but fell short of expected sales. In My Lifetime, Vol. 1 was released in 1997, and it too had decent sales, but nothing spectacular. The 1998 release Vol. 2: Hard Knock Life was his biggest hit to date, going five times platinum and featured five singles, including "Hard Knock Life." Many feel as though "Hard Knock" life was the biggest single of his career.
In 1999, Jay-Z released Vol. 3 … Life and Times of S. Carter. The album went triple platinum, and featured the single "Big Pimpin." The Blueprint was released in 2001, and is considered by many to be one of hip hops' "classic albums." Released on September 11, 2001, the album hit No. 1 and sold more than 450,000 copies in the first week. In 2003, Jay-Z toured with the likes of 50 Cent, Busta Rhymes, and Sean Paul while working on The Black Album. The Black Album was released shortly before Jay-Z's "retirement" show at Madison Square Garden in New York City that same year.
Many continue to speculate that Jay-Z will come out of "retirement" and release an album in 2006, marking the 10th anniversary of his debut album. Jay-Z has been nominated for 18 Grammy Awards while winning five awards. He is also co-owner of the 40/40 Club in New York City and another 40/40 Club in Atlantic City, N.J. Jay-Z is also a part-owner of the NBA team the New Jersey Nets.
