James McMurtry, son of novelist Larry McMurtry, was born in Fort Worth, Texas. His father handed James his first guitar at the age of 7, and was taught by his English professor mother how to play it.

Raised in Leesburg, Virginia, James McMurtry got his start in the music business while he was in his teens. He performed his own songs in a downtown beer garden while studying at the University of Arizona at Tucson. After college he returned to Texas and entered a New Folk songwriter contest and was one of six winners. John Mellencamp was starring in a movie based on a script by James' father, and James handed him one of his demo tapes. Mellencamp had a hand in producing James McMurtry's debut album Too Long in the Wasteland in 1989.

James McMurtry then followed that up with releases in 1992, 1995, 1998, and 2002. When he released Childish Things in 2005, it marked the first studio release by James McMurtry in three years.
