How did pop singer James Blunt develop such musical prowess with a military father who considered all music, even classical, to be unnecessary noise? Blame Mom. Mom encouraged young James Blunt to take up the recorder at 3, the violin at 5, and the piano at 7. And he has kept learning instruments ever since.
In boarding school, the songs of David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Supertramp, and The Pixies broadened his musical exposure. Later he gravitated to Jeff Buckley, Paul Simon, Neil Young, Leonard Cohen, and Elliott Smith. James Blunt got himself an electric guitar when he was 14 and started to experiment making mistakes and writing songs. "I could take it away to a private place," James Blunt told USA Today. "A piano is always public."
James Blunt didn't follow the typical path of most musicians. He studied Aerospace Manufacturing Engineering and Sociology in college; then James Blunt followed a long-standing family tradition of serving in the British military. Stationed in Kosovo in 1999, James Blunt saw the darker side of humanity. Music was his outlet. When James Blunt finished his tour, music became his next path. After playing small clubs in London James Blunt landed a gig opening for Elton John.
James Blunt came to Los Angeles in September 2003. His Back to Bedlam debut is mesmerizing fans. "You're Beautiful" reached No. 1 and James Blunt became the first British artist to top the American singles chart in nearly a decade. The song is inspired by an ex-girlfriend after James Blunt glimpsed her with her new boyfriend on a train.
As his fame grew he was often compared to Elton John. Although he hates to be thought of as that sensitive singer and songwriter, James Blunt gets his point across well in song. Yet, he says, "I'm British, so quite bad at expressing myself in conversation, as any ex-girlfriend will tell you. I'm probably emotionally stunted." According to James Blunt, combining music with language is an outlet to better express feelings. And his feelings seem to be universal. His headline tour starting March 13 sold out the day tickets went on sale.
