Amy Ray and Emily Saliers got to know each other while they were students at Laurel Ridge Elementary School in DeKalb County, Georgia. The two began performing as the B-Band and Saliers and Ray while they were at Shamrock High School. Saliers graduated and went on to Tulane University while Ray graduated and moved on to Vanderbilt University a year later.
Soon enough, both girls would end up returning to Georgia and transferring to Emory University. By 1985, they had started calling themselves the Indigo Girls. They released "Crazy Game" in 1985, and their full-length album Strange Fire was released in 1987. Epic signed the Indigo Girls in 1988.
Their self-titled major-label debut came in 1989, and the Indigo Girls won a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Recording in 1990. Their second album, Nomads*Indians*Saints went gold when it was released in 1991. Rites of Passage, released in 1992, saw their first Top 10 hit in "Galileo."
A few more releases later, and the Indigo Girls latest release was 2005's Rarities, which was a collection of b-sides and rare tracks. That release marked their fulfillment of their contract with Epic. The Indigo Girls then signed with Hollywood Records, and they are expected to release an album in September 2006.
