Hot Tuna is the acoustic side project of Jefferson Airplane members Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukonen. They released their self-titled debut album in 1969. While their albums never sold particularly outstandingly, Hot Tuna managed to build somewhat of a cult following. When Hot Tuna added violinist Papa John Creech, they released First Pull Up, Then Pull Down in 1971 and Burgers in 1972, along with American's Choice and Yellow Fever in 1975 and Hoppkorv in 1976.

When drummer Bob Steeler joined the band, Hot Tuna became a heavy rock band. Hot Tuna is considered the predecessor of jam bands such as Phish. Casady and Kaukonen separated in the late ‘70s, but they reunited in the mid-'80s along with Michael Falzarano. He ended up staying with the band for a number of releases beginning with Splashdown in 1984 through And Furthermore … in 1999; in 2002, he left Hot Tuna for his solo album The King James Sessions.

In 2004-05, Hot Tuna toured with Barry Mitterhoff and Erik Diaz, but Hot Tuna is known as shorthand for Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukonen, since those two are the only Hot Tuna members with any staying power. Both are members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but with Jefferson Airplane.
