Hank William Jr. is the son of country music pioneer Hank Williams and also the father of Hank Williams III. Born on May 26, 1949, Randall Hank Williams began performing at the age of 8. Throughout the '60s, Hank Williams Jr. had numerous Top 10 country hits, but he slowly began changing his sound. When he recorded Your Cheatin' Heart, the biography of his father, the music was more rock and roll.
By the '70s, Hank Williams Jr. found himself performing a unique blend of traditional country and southern rock and blues. While mainstream country radio would not play his songs, he still managed to garner a devoted audience.
During the '80s, Hank Williams Jr. managed to score 35 Top 10 and No. 1 singles and recorded a string of gold, platinum, and multi-platinum selling albums. Regardless of his millions of albums sold, records for concert attendance, and establishing himself as one of country music's biggest stars, country music failed to recognize Hank Williams Jr. as a country music artist. Finally, in 1986 and 1987, he was awarded as the Entertainer of the Year by the Country Music Association; in 1987, 1988, and 1989 he won the same award from the Academy of Country Music.
In 1989, ABC asked Hank Williams Jr. to change the lyrics of his song "All My Rowdy Friends" from "All my rowdy friends are coming over tonight" to "All my rowdy friends are here on a Monday night." The change was used for ABC's Monday Night Football broadcasts, and soon lead to one of television's most popular quotes in "Are you ready for some football?"
He also won an Emmy Award in 1991, 1992, 1993, and 1994 for Composed Theme, as well as the Johnny Cash Visionary Award from Country Music Television in 2006. Hank Williams Jr. has also opened for Monday Night Football, the NFL Playoffs on ABC, and Super Bowl XL. His most recent release, 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection -- The Best Of Hank Williams Jr. came in 2004.
