Shelton Hank Williams was born December 12, 1972 to country music star Hank Williams Jr., who was born to country music star Hank Williams. Hank III comes from a line of country music stars, but decidedly went against the country genre when it came time to record his own music.
Hank III released his debut album, Risin' Outlaw in 1999, and released the follow up Lovesick, Broke & Driftin' in 2002. While he had some trouble with his record label, Curb Records refused to release 2004's Thrown out of the Bar. Eventually things were worked out, and the album was reworked to Straight to Hell.
Again Hank III battled with that release, this time when Wal-Mart refused to carry Straight to Hell. It was reworked yet again and released in early 2006 as a two-disc set in two formats: the clean, Wal-Mart version, and the uncensored version. Straight to Hell was the first major-label country album to have a parental advisory warning.
Even though his releases are classified under country, Hank III's music is hard to classify. He can be filed under hard-twang, punkabilly, cowpunk, alternacountry, slacker swing, hillbilly, and honky punk. Hank III manages to have a loyal fan following thanks to the fact that he allows his audience to audio/videotape his shows.
