As the longest-running radio program in the United States, the Grand Ole Opry began in 1925. The weekly Saturday night country music program promotes both live performances in Nashville and on the road.
Beginning as the WSM Barn Dance, the first performer on the show was 77 year old fiddler Uncle Jimmy Thompson and the director was 30 year old George D. Hay. Early performers on the show included the Fruit Jar Drinkers, the Crook Brothers, and the Possum Hunters. The name Grand Ole Opry came about in 1927. As the show gained more and more popularity, they needed to move to a new studio. Grand Ole Opry moved from four different locations before settling into the Ryman Auditorium until 1974; from there they moved to the 4,400-seat Grand Ole Opry House, where they still are today.
Hundreds of performers have been at the Grand Ole Opry, from up-and-coming stars to superstars and legends. Throughout the years, the quality of the Grand Ole Opry program has waxed and waned, but it still manages to draw both listeners and attendees to the Grand Ole Opry House.
