American power trio Grand Funk Railroad was highly popular in the '70s and has sold over 25 million albums. Formed in 1969 with Mark Farner, Mel Schacher, and Terry Knight in the city of Flint, Michigan, Grand Funk Railroad got their name from the Grand Trunk Western Railroad.

Following the 1969 Atlanta Pop Festival, the artists were signed by Capitol Records. By the '70s they had sold more albums than any other American band, and even broke the Beatles' Shea Stadium record by selling out in 71 hours. That record still stands.

Grand Funk Railroad managed to release eight albums in three years. They launched a huge (literally) marketing campaign for Closer to Home by paying $100,000 for a huge billboard in Times Square in New York City in 1970. The album went on to multi-platinum status.

Craig Frost was recruited to join the band in 1972. Shortly after, Grand Funk Railroad disbanded. They reunited in 1980 and added Dennis Bellinger while losing Mel Schacher. Grand Funk Railroad would release a few more albums with Warner Brothers, and again disband. During the '90s, members of Grand Funk Railroad came and went, and Timothy Cashion, Max Carl, and Bruce Kulick joined the band. Grand Funk Railroad has steadily toured since 2000. They now perform an average of 50 concerts a year.
