Gov't Mule formed in 1994 as a side project of the Allman Brothers Band. While Gov't Mule does not get a lot of airtime, they manage to remain popular due to touring.
The Allman Brothers Band reformed in 1989, Warren Haynes and Allen Woody were added to the line up. While both members shared an affinity for '60s-style trios such as Cream and James Gang, they soon joined with Matt Arbs to become Gov't Mule. Gov't Mule was to perform during Allman Brothers breaks. Gov't Mule released their self-titled debut in 1995.
Soon enough, Gov't Mule realized that the Allman Brothers Band was not going to record any new music, so Woody and Haynes took Gov't Mule on as their full-time project. Their third release, 2000's Life Before Insanity, received critical acclaim and was expected to be Gov't Mule's big break. When Woody was found dead in New York City, Abts and Haynes contemplated breaking up the band. Instead, they put on a benefit concert, "One for Woody," to help raise money for his daughter's education.
Haynes would soon be back with the Allman Brothers Band, but still working with Gov't Mule. The Deep End Volume 1 and The Deep End Volume II, released in 2001 and 2002, were recorded using two of Woody's favorite bass players. Gov't Mule used various performers from other bands during their tour in support of the two releases, and even released The Deepest End, Live in Concert, in 2003.
Most recently, Gov't Mule has released Deja Voodoo in 2004, and the EP Mo'Voodoo was released in 2005. High and Mighty is scheduled for release in the summer of 2006.
