Gordon Meredith Lightfoot Jr. was born November 17, 1938. The Canadian singer/songwriter/lyricist and poet began singing with the youth choir at St. Paul's United Church. In 1957, Gordon Lightfoot moved to California to study jazz composition and orchestration at Westlake College of Music for one year; then he returned to Canada. In the beginning, any songs Gordon Lightfoot wrote were sung by other artists.
In 1966, Gordon Lightfoot finally released an album of his own songs which he himself sung. Lightfoot! garnered him a reputation as a songwriter and a singer, and Gordon Lightfoot was a star in Canada without having to move to the United States. His first Canadian tour was in 1967, but it included shows in New York City. In the late '60s and early '70s, Gordon Lightfoot toured in Europe and Australia.
Gordon Lightfoot's "If You Could Read My Mind" became a Top 10 hit in 1971 and 1974's "Sundown" hit No. 1 in the States. Through the '90s, Gordon Lightfoot managed to release two albums and put on 50 shows a year. After a near-fatal abdominal hemorrhage in 2002, Gordon Lightfoot was in a coma for nearly two months, but recovered and returned with Harmony in 2004. Gordon Lightfoot continues to tour the United States and Canada.
