The Go Go's are singer Belinda Carlisle, guitarists Jane Wiedlin and Charlotte Caffrey, drummer Gina Schock, and bassist Kathy Valentine. The Go Go's have been together since 1978. Many feel as through the Go Go's were quite possibly the first all-woman band to achieve commercial success in rock. While they first began as a pop-punk band, the Go Go's soon turned their sound into ‘80s rock.
In 1980, the Go Go's found their first hit with "We've Got the Beat," which hit No. 20 in the United States. The Go Go's signed on with IRS Records and released their debut album Beauty and the Beat. Beauty and the Beat was on the charts for six weeks eventually selling over two million copies. Included on Beauty and the Beat was the single "Our Lips are Sealed" in addition to their hit "We've Got the Beat." "Our Lips are Sealed" hit as high as No. 2. The Go Go's follow up release, Vacation, was highly anticipated but failed to bring as much success as their debut. In 1984, Talk Show was released, and one year later the Go Go's broke up following their performance in the 1985 Rock in Rio festival.
Drug addiction and inner conflicts among the members of the Go Go's played a big part in the break up of the band. Five years later, Jane Wiedlin organized a reunion of the Go Go's for the benefit for the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). Four years later, the Go Go's reunited to record Return of the Valley of the Go-Go's. In 2001, the Go Go's released their fifth album and first in seven years, God Bless the Go Go's. The Go Go's have five Top 40 hits to their credit, and continue to tour since after deciding to perform and record together again in 2001. Two of the members of the Go Go's, Charlotte Caffrey and Jane Wiedlin, co-wrote Keith Urban's hit song "But For the Grace of God" in 2001. The Go Go's have kept sharp touring the past few years and are ready to tour yet again in 2006.
