To survive more than four decades in the music industry The Four Tops learned to adapt with the times. The Motown quartet has a repertoire that includes doo-wop, jazz, soul music, R&B, disco, adult contemporary, and showtunes. Levi Stubbs, Abdul "Duke" Fakir, Renaldo "Obie" Benson, and Lawrence Payton remained together for over four decades, finally forced to endure a lineup change when Payton died in 1997. Originally called The Four Aims, Levi Stubbs, a baritone, was their lead singer when most groups of the time were fronted by a tenor. With hits such as "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)" and "Reach Out I'll Be There" The Four Tops helped define the Motown sound.

The Four Tops scored their first Top 20 hit in 1964 with "Baby I need Your Lovin'." Struggling in the late ‘70s they mounted a comeback in the early ‘80s making a Top 20 appearance with 1981's "When She Was My Girl." They have 21 hits that reached the Top 20.

Following the 1983 television special Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever a battle-of-the-bands between The Four Tops and The Temptations was re-created on the road. Both groups began a semi-regular joint tour; the two groups continue to play dates together.

The Four Tops were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990, and into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1999. Death and illness forced lineup changes in the late ‘90s. Former Temptation Theo Peoples joined the act as did Ronnie McNair and Payton's son Roquel. Abdul "Duke" Fakir remains the only member of the original Four Tops.
