Named after the World War II name "foo fighter" for mysterious aerial phenomena, the Foo Fighters have made quite a name for themselves around the world. Dave Grohl began with the Foo Fighters while he was still with Nirvana, but decided to keep his work under wraps in fear of ruining the chemistry Nirvana had. Shortly following the death of Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl formed the Foo Fighters in 1995.
What first began as a one-man band starring Dave Grohl grew soon grew to be a quartet of singer Dave Grohl, bassist Nate Mendel, drummer William Goldsmith, and guitarist Pat Smear. In June of 1995, the Foo Fighters released their self-titled solo debut. During the recording of the second album, William Goldsmith decided to leave the band, and Dave Grohl took over on drums. The Colour and the Shape was released on May 20, 1997. Taylor Hawkins soon signed on as the drummer for the Foo Fighters.
By the time the Foo Fighters went into the studio to record their third album, There Is Nothing Left to Lose, Pat Smear had left the band and various members had come and gone. Following Capitol president Gary Gersh's force off of the label, the Foo Fighters signed with RCA. In 2001, the Foo Fighters recorded their fourth album, One by One. Three years later, the Foo Fighters released In Your Honor, a double LP. In celebration of the band's 10th anniversary, the two CD set included a CD of rock songs and a CD of acoustic songs.
Throughout their history, the Foo Fights have had a number of singles hit No. 1. Their most recent release has peaked as high as No. 2 on both charts in the U.K. and the U.S. Current members of the band include singer Dave Grohl, drummer Taylor Hawkins, bassist Nate Mendel, and guitarist Chris Shiflett.
