Flaming Lips Information

The alternative rock band The Flaming Lips take an indie rock/post-punk approach, but the band is known for their lush, multi-layered, psychedelic-style arrangements and their spacey lyrics and bizarre song titles. They have released 11 albums from 1986 to 2006.

Their only U.S. hit is 1993's "She Don't Use Jelly," however, they have a loyal following and receive critical acclaim. The Flaming Lips are an Oklahoma City band but they have achieved greater commercial success in Europe.

The Flaming Lips acclaimed 1999 release The Soft Bulletin combined more traditional catchy melodies with languid synthetic strings, hypnotic, carefully manipulated beats, booming cymbals and oddball and deeper, philosophical lyrics (sung much more strongly than on earlier releases). The album was one of the underground hits of the year, widely considered to be one of the best albums of the entire decade.

Formed in 1983, The Flaming Lips now includes Steven Drozd, Wayne Coyne, and Michael Ivins. Kliph Scurlock plays with them in live shows. Live shows for The Flaming Lips have featured featuring fursuits, balloons, puppets, video projections and complex stage lighting. Q magazine named The Flaming Lips one of the "50 bands to see before you die". Following the April 4, 2006 release of At War with the Mystics, The Flaming Lips toured again. At War with the Mystics reached No. 11 on the U.S. charts and No. 6 in the UK, the highest position in The Flaming Lips' history.
