Fiona Apple McAfee Maggart, or Fiona Apple as she is more commonly known, was born in New York City to singer Diane McAfee and actor Brandon Maggart. Fiona Apple got her music career started at an early age, when she began playing the piano at the age of 8 and started composing songs at 12.
When she was 15, Fiona Apple was signed by Sony Music when a friend slipped one of her demos to a record executive. Her voice, piano skills, and lyrics made the combination very appealing. Fiona Apple released Tidal in 1996. Tidal went on to sell 3 million copies, and saw five singles. While in the video for "Criminal," Fiona Apple was scantily clothed and soon there after made the memorable speech "This world is bullshit, and you shouldn't model your life on what you think that we think is cool, and what we're wearing and what we're saying," in reference to the MTV audience when she was awarded with an MTV Award for Best New Artist Video in 1997.
After hearing it from various comedians and critics, Fiona Apple was unapologetic. When the Pawn ... was released in 1999, and actually was entitled with a 90-word poem. While the album experimented with drum loops, clavichord, and difficult lyrics, it was met with mixed reviews. When the Pawn only released three singles.
Extraordinary Machine was released in 2005, after many years of anticipation from Fiona Apple fans. The first edition of the album was submitted to Sony in 2003, but it was shelved for two years. Then in 2005, some of the tracks were leaked onto the Internet. Fiona Apple then embarked on a tour to support the album in late 2005, and began as the opening act for Coldplay in early 2006; a headlining tour took place in the late summer of 2006. Fiona Apple fans eagerly awaited her first concerts in almost seven years.
