Born Audrey Faith Perry, she was raised in Star, Mississippi. At 17, Faith Hill formed a band that played local rodeos. At 19, she quit college and moved to Nashville to make it as a singer, first finding work selling T-shirts. She was married to singer/song writer and music executive Dan Hill for 6 years through 1994, which is where her last name originated. She worked as a secretary at a music publishing firm, where she was discovered by accident while singing to herself one day. Faith Hill worked as a demo singer for the firm and also performed professionally as a harmony vocalist. A Warner Brothers executive caught her in an act at a Nashville club and saw a star.

In 1993, Faith Hill's debut single, "Wild One," spent four weeks at No. 1. The follow-up, a country version of "Piece of My Heart," also hit No. 1. Surgery on her vocal cords delayed recording Faith Hill's next album, "It Matters to Me." In 1996 Faith Hill opened for Tim McGraw and the pairing has been feeding magazine headlines ever since. Faith Hill broke off her engagement to record producer Scott Hendricks and married McGraw that October. Their daughter, Gracie, was born in May of 1997.

Hill's 1998 album, Faith, included "This Kiss." Not only did the single top the country charts for three weeks, it also became her first pop hit, climbing to No. 7. Faith Hill gave birth to her second daughter, Maggie, that year. Faith Hill's next album, Breathe, crossed over to the pop and adult contemporary side of the business. Faith Hill called the album, "a mixture of musical styles that reflects my love for country, pop, gospel, and rhythm and blues." The song "Breathe" entered the charts at No. 1 in late 1999, and its title track became Faith Hill's biggest hit; spending six weeks on top of the country charts and rising higher on the adult contemporary charts.

In 2001 she took a break and spent time with family, adding Audrey, her third daughter, to the McGraw clan. The album Cry followed in 2002.
