Evanescence Information

The alternative rock band Evanescence was formed by Amy Lee (vocals) and Ben Moody (former lead guitar). The two met at camp and discovered similar music interests. The duo from Little Rock, Arkansas grew a following due to local radio airplay but couldn't initially play live shows because of the lack of back up musicians. But demand grew and eventually keyboardist David Hodges, guitarist John LeCompt, bass player William Boyd and Rocky Gray on drums joined Evanescence. Originally considered by many to be part of the Christian rock scene the band distanced themselves from that classification. Spiritual themes are only a segment of the material they write about. David Hodges left the band at that point.

Limited releases of their first EPs are in short supply and the band encourages sharing the songs via the Internet. Fallen, their 2003 debut album, was certified 6x Platinum. The album is one of only eight albums in chart history to spend a full year in the Billboard Top 50. The debut Evanescence single "Bring Me To Life" was a global hit for the band and reached No. 5 on the American Billboard Hot 100.

Evanescence was featured in the soundtrack for the action movie Daredevil. But in October 2003 Moody left the band abruptly in the middle of a European tour. The band went on to earn two Grammy Awards in 2004 for Best Hard Rock Performance and Best New Artist. Guitarist Terry Balsamo from Cold replaced him. Moody would later admit to a drug and alcohol problem coupled with a bipolar disorder that contributed to tensions within the band. In 2004 Evanescence released the DVD/CD compilation Anywhere But Home. As of 2006 the band had sold nearly 14 million records worldwide.

Bassist Will Boyd had left the band in July 2006 preferring not to embark on another large scale tour. Former Revolution Smile guitarist Tim McCord will be playing bass for the band. The studio album The Open Door is scheduled for a Fall 2006 release.
