Legendary guitarist, vocalist, and composer Eric Clapton made a name for himself both as a member of several bands that helped shaped rock history and as a gifted solo artist. Eric Clapton is the only triple inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame (as a member of both the Yardbirds and Cream, and as a solo artist). He has worked together with some of the greatest music icons of the last half century including George Harrison, Steve Winwood, BB King, and The Who. To date Eric Clapton has won or shared in 18 Grammy Awards

Born during World War II as the illegitimate son of a 16 year old girl, Eric Clapton was raised by his grandparents. When he found out that his sister was actually his mother, the news distanced Eric Clapton from his family and school. Often feeling like an outsider, Eric Clapton found a sense of belonging in music, particularly the blues. His grandparents helped him purchase his first guitar and Eric Clapton devoted himself to developing his skill.

In October 1963, Eric Clapton was the most talked about guitar player on the British R&B pub circuit. Keith Relf and Paul Samwell-Smith recruited him to become a member of The Yardbirds. The band was a success but Eric Clapton later left to pursue a blues sound. Eric Clapton built his reputation as a guitarist performing with the Bluesbreakers. He then co-founded Cream. Three albums brought the group worldwide acclaim but they didn't last. He formed Blind Faith, working with Steve Winwood and former Cream members. Next he joined Derek and the Dominos. Neither band lasted but Eric Clapton's fame did.

Struggling through a three-year heroin addiction, Eric Clapton became reclusive. Yet Eric Clapton developed as a composer and vocalist during that time and emerged with a new sound in 1973. He continually reinvented his sound on subsequent albums. Eric Clapton launched the album 461 Ocean Boulevard. The main hit from this album was the number one single I Shot the Sheriff." After a couple of less successful albums, Eric Clapton released Slowhand in November 1977. It featured huge Eric Clapton hits Cocaine," Lay Down Sally," and Wonderful Tonight."

By the early 80s Eric Clapton had become an alcoholic. After entering a rehabilitation center in 1982, Eric Clapton still struggled with alcoholism for five years. He now devotes substantial time and money to helping those suffering from addiction. In 1998, Eric Clapton opened Crossroads Centre, a rehabilitation facility for drug and alcohol abuse that serves the poorest people of the Caribbean.

In the late 80s, Eric Clapton carved out a second career as the composer of film scores including films such as The Story of Us and Lethal Weapon series. With Eric Clapton's 1988 album Crossroads his success rebounded a bit. However, in late 1990 Eric Clapton lost three close friends in a helicopter crash, guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan and road crew members Colin Smythe and Nigel Browne. A few months later, Eric Clapton's son Conor fell from a high-rise apartment to his death. While mourning, Eric Clapton wrote "Tears in Heaven," a song written for his son that became a huge hit and won a Grammy Award. Despite his grief, Eric Clapton's career flourished. In 1992 the acoustic album Unplugged was named album of the year.

Eric Clapton continues to perform and often collaborates with other artists. Eric Clapton teamed up with BB King for a hit duo, and also released Me and Mr. Johnson, an album honoring the late bluesman Robert Johnson. Back Home, the first Eric Clapton album with new original material in nearly five years, was released on August 30, 2005. He is touring into 2006.
