After leaving Depeche Mode and having a mildly successful run in the duo Yazoo (also known as Yaz), Vince Clark placed an ad for a singer. Twenty-one year old former butcher Andy Bell stood out from the large group of candidates and Erasure was born.

Erasure is a heavy synthesizer pop duo that formed in 1985.For almost 10 years Erasure was the biggest pop band in years. Erasure wrote their own songs and had an incredible string of success. Even more surprising was their success given Andy Bell's openly gay lyrics during a time when the culture was less accepting of homosexuality. The British duo Erasure scored five No. 1 albums un the U.K. and 32 Top 40 singles.

Erasure embraced pop and audiences embraced them. Though the success of Erasure waned in the late '90s their most recent hit, "Breathe," rose to No. 1 on the dance charts in 2005. The 2006 release of Union Square features acoustic versions of previous Erasure songs. A new dance album is also in the works.
