Influenced by artists such as Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, Emmylou Harris recorded her first album in 1970. But it wasn't until after years of collaborations and back up performances that Emmylou Harris would record her major label debut in 1975 with her first hit country single "If I Could Only Win Your Love." She formed The Hot Band which she would work with until the late ‘80s. With a little rock flavor in her music Emmylou Harris began to gain a crossover audience. She released a series of country albums followed by several collaborations with Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, Neil Young, and Bob Dylan.

One of the most notable Emmylou Harris solo albums was 1980's Roses in the Snow, a Grammy-winning collection of bluegrass material. "That Lovin' You Feelin' Again," recorded with Roy Orbison, won the Grammy Award for best vocal duo in 1981. In 1987, Emmylou Harris again teamed up with Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt for the Trio album. The album was nominated for three Grammy awards, won Best Country Collaboration, and hit the Top 10 on both the pop and country charts launching four hit singles.

As country stations started to shift their focus to youth-oriented country artists in the early ‘90s Emmylou Harris shifted her career direction. Still collaborating with many well-recognized musicians Emmylou Harris started to lose airtime on country radio stations but her audience expanded to include alternative rock listeners. She was featured on the soundtrack for the film O Brother, Where Art Thou? and toured with an allstar group of country folk and blues artists following its release.

The most recent Emmylou Harris album, All the Roadrunning, is a collaboration with former Dire Straits member Mark Knopfler. Emmylou Harris has recorded more than 20 solo albums and five collaborations. She started writing many of her own songs midway through her career.
